Twelve personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) were injured Tuesday morning after a fuel tanker fire dramatically reignited and exploded during emergency response efforts in Gomoa Potsin.

According to the GNFS, the firefighters were carrying out cooling operations when the blaze unexpectedly flared up again, triggering the explosion.

Four of the injured officers sustained serious wounds. Three were rushed to the Winneba Trauma and Specialist Hospital, while another received treatment at the Potsin Polyclinic. The remaining eight, who suffered minor injuries, were treated at the scene.

In a statement shared on Facebook, the Service praised the swift collaboration of supporting agencies and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting lives and property, while wishing the injured personnel a speedy recovery. Officials say they are closely monitoring the victims’ condition and will provide full support.

The tanker, bearing registration number GT 5671-22, was transporting 54,000 litres of petrol when it caught fire under still-unclear circumstances.

Emergency teams responded to a distress call placed at 5:58 a.m., dispatching fire tenders from Apam and Kasoa along with a private water tanker. By the time firefighters arrived at 6:26 a.m., the vehicle was fully engulfed, with flames rapidly spreading to nearby structures.

Crews battled the inferno for nearly two hours before bringing it under control—preventing what could have been a far more devastating incident for surrounding communities.

The tanker’s driver and his assistant escaped unharmed. Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
