The Ghana Police Service has arrested 12 individuals in connection with several acts of electoral-related violence, including the destruction of the Electoral Commission (EC) office in Damongo.

The arrests follow a violent incident in the Damongo Municipal Constituency, where a group of frustrated youth set fire to the EC office in protest over delays in the election results. The blaze caused significant damage to the building.

Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters, angered by the prolonged wait for the results, stormed the EC office and set it alight, with the fire quickly consuming the structure.

In a statement, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, Director of the Police Public Affairs Directorate, confirmed the arrests and outlined the preliminary investigation. She stated that the suspects were involved in damaging state assets, including the EC office in Damongo, and vandalising district chief executives’ residences. There were also reports of looting, with suspects breaking into a school feeding programme warehouse in Tamale and stealing food items.

Footage of the incidents, including the attack and looting, has been obtained and is being reviewed by investigators. The police have urged the public to remain calm, with increased patrols deployed to ensure law and order.
