President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in Emelia Afi Agbenyo and Dr. Joseph Kweku Asamoah as deputy chairpersons of Ghana’s Electoral Commission, filling vacancies in the body responsible for overseeing the country’s elections.
At a ceremony on Monday, October 12, Mr. Mahama called on the two officials to exercise their authority impartially, warning against favouritism toward any political party, candidate or government.
“Your duty is to the Republic of Ghana and its people,” he said, adding that their responsibilities must be discharged with fairness, restraint and fidelity to the law.
Mr. Mahama said the Electoral Commission should apply the same standards to all political actors, including his own government and the ruling party. He stressed that the commission must protect the right of Ghanaians to choose their leaders freely.
The president also urged the new appointees to uphold the law even when doing so might conflict with the interests of those in power.
“You must have the courage to uphold what is right even when it is inconvenient for those in power,” he said.
Ms. Agbenyo serves as deputy director for operations at the Ghana TVET Service. Dr. Asamoah, a law lecturer at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, previously held several senior positions at the Electoral Commission, including director of finance, director of the training centre and head of audit.
Their appointments follow the resignation of Dr. Bossman Asare, whose responsibilities included corporate affairs, effective July 31, 2026, and the retirement of Samuel Tettey, the former deputy chairperson in charge of operations, upon reaching the mandatory retirement age.
The appointments restore the commission’s senior leadership complement as it continues its mandate to oversee elections and safeguard Ghana’s electoral process.
