John Dramani Mahama has been elected as Ghana’s next president following a decisive victory in the 2024 presidential election, according to official results.
With a total of 11,191,422 voters casting their ballots, Mahama, the candidate from the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55% of the vote. This victory comes as President Akufo-Addo’s tenure will end on January 6, 2025.
Mahama’s closest rival, Mahamudu Bawumia from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered 4,657,304 votes, accounting for 41.61%. Other candidates included independent candidates, such as Nana Kwame Bediako, who received 84,440 votes (0.75%), and Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, who obtained 31,200 votes.
A range of smaller parties also participated, with notable results from Daniel Augustus Lartey of the Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP) who earned 16,673 votes (0.15%), and Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement (GUM), who secured 16,461 votes (0.15%).
The election saw minimal turnout for some candidates, including Kofi Akpaloo of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) with 5,219 votes (0.09%) and Mohammed Frempong of the National Democratic Party (NDP) with 4,413 votes (0.04%).
The result marks a significant political shift as Mahama, who previously served as president from 2012 to 2017, returns to office after defeating a crowded field of contenders.
