A peace ceremony aimed at reconciling students from Bawku Senior High School and Bawku Technical Institute turned violent on Tuesday, February 25, leaving five students seriously injured and several others with minor wounds.

The event, held in the Kpalwega suburb of Bawku, was intended to mark the end of ongoing violent clashes between the two schools. Traditional leaders led the ceremony, which featured the symbolic burial of an okra stick to signify the end of hostilities and the beginning of peace.

However, the event quickly descended into chaos as tensions flared. Students from both schools began throwing stones at each other, disrupting the ceremony and injuring several participants.

The Bawku Divisional Police Command responded quickly to restore order, and the injured students were transported to Quality and Vineyard hospitals in Bawku for treatment.

Despite the violence, school authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) remained committed to the peace process. With the assistance of the senior prefects from both schools, the symbolic burial of the okra stick was eventually completed, offering a glimmer of hope for future reconciliation.
