Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, disclosed in Parliament on Thursday, March 13, that 50 of the 150 Ghanaians currently detained in the United States have received final deportation orders and are expected to return to Ghana by mid-2025.
In a detailed update, Mr. Ablakwa explained that the individuals facing deportation were held on charges including rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry. “Updates from the Washington mission indicate that 150 Ghanaians are detained across various U.S. centers, awaiting deportation for offenses ranging from rape to fraud and unlawful entry,” he said.
Of the 150 individuals, 50 have been issued final deportation orders by U.S. courts, with repatriation expected in the first half of 2025. The remaining 100 cases are either under appeal or have been dismissed.
In addition, Mr. Ablakwa confirmed that three Ghanaians have already been processed for deportation and are scheduled to leave the U.S. on commercial flights on March 19, March 28, and April 1, 2025. He also mentioned that one individual had been granted release to seek medical care after representations were made on health grounds.
Furthermore, ten Ghanaians have undergone interviews at the Ghana Embassy to verify their nationality and ensure due process before any final deportation decisions are made.
