Vice president Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has called on President-elect John Dramani Mahama to intervene and stop National Democratic Congress (NDC) supporters from gathering at collation centres armed with weapons.
Bawumia’s appeal follows reports of NDC members massing at collation centres to challenge parliamentary results and protest delays in the declaration of some constituencies. In some cases, these supporters allegedly declared their parliamentary candidates as winners without official confirmation.
The Vice President condemned the actions, stressing that they undermine Ghana’s democratic values. He urged all parties to respect lawful processes and the institutions overseeing the election.
In a statement issued on December 9, Bawumia said, “I call on the President-elect, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, to demonstrate statesmanship by reigning in his supporters to preserve the peace and unity of the country. These actions are not in line with the democratic culture we seek to uphold.”
He also expressed concerns about the dismantling of state institutions and the looting of state assets, urging Mahama to ensure the protection of public property. “He has won an election; he has not staged a coup d’état. He must take responsibility for safeguarding life and property,” Bawumia added.
