A predawn collision on April 3 along the Kintampo–Tamale highway left nine people dead and 27 others critically injured, underscoring persistent safety concerns on one of Ghana’s most troubled road corridors.

Authorities said a passenger bus traveling toward Widaana in the Pusiga District collided head-on with a cargo truck transporting tomatoes to Kumasi. The crash occurred near Suronuase, a community in the Kintampo North municipality, at approximately 3 a.m., reducing both vehicles to wreckage and scattering debris across the roadway.

Preliminary accounts from witnesses indicate the bus driver attempted to overtake multiple vehicles, veering into the opposite lane and into the path of the oncoming truck. Eight victims were pronounced dead at the scene, while a ninth succumbed to injuries after being transported to a  hospital.

Emergency responders rushed 27 critically injured passengers to Kintampo Municipal Hospital, where they remain under intensive care.

The incident has renewed scrutiny of the Kintampo–Tamale highway, a route long criticized by motorists for poor maintenance, including extensive potholes and deteriorating surfaces. Road safety advocates say such conditions, combined with risky driving practices, continue to contribute to fatal accidents on the stretch.
