In a dramatic turn of events, Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has publicly taken full responsibility for the chaos that erupted during last week’s contentious vetting of ministerial nominees. Speaking on the floor of Parliament on February 4, 2025, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the public outrage that followed the disruptions and pleaded with Speaker Alban Bagbin to reconsider the consequences of the incident.

“I take full responsibility as a leader on my side for all actions that took place,” the Effutu MP stated. “In light of this, I invite you, Mr. Speaker, to reconsider your decision and all subsequent actions in the circumstances, with assurances given.”

His comments marked a stark contrast to the Minority’s previous stance, which had criticized the Speaker’s decision, claiming it was outside the boundaries of parliamentary protocol.

The disruptions, which included heated exchanges and physical confrontations among MPs, led to Speaker Bagbin’s decision to establish a special committee to investigate the matter. Four MPs from both sides of the aisle—Rockson Dafeamekpor, Frank Annoh-Dompreh, Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, and Jerry Ahmed Shaib—were suspended following the altercation.

The Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, also weighed in, urging a more conciliatory approach to resolving the aftermath and fostering unity within Parliament.

As the investigation continues, the incident highlights the deeply divided nature of Ghana’s political landscape, raising questions about the effectiveness of parliamentary proceedings in an increasingly polarized environment.
