The Ministry of Education has swiftly rejected recent reports suggesting that the government plans to abolish teacher trainee allowances, calling the claims “misleading” and “sensational.”

In a statement issued on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, the Ministry clarified that the reports, which stemmed from comments made by Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu during a meeting with the Executives of the Principals of Colleges of Education (PRINCOF), were inaccurate. The Ministry emphasized that the government remains fully committed to supporting students at Colleges of Education, and that any changes to financial assistance would be carefully considered, including the potential expansion of student loan schemes.

“Contrary to what was reported, the government has no intention of scrapping the allowances,” the Ministry stated. “We will continue to support our teacher trainees, and any discussions around financial support are ongoing.”

The Ministry also urged the media to verify information before publication to avoid causing unnecessary alarm. It stressed that a headline in the Tuesday edition of The Daily Graphic, which claimed “Teacher Trainee Allowance to Go,” misrepresented the Minister’s comments and led to confusion.

“The public is advised to disregard the misleading report and to rely on official statements from the Ministry for accurate information,” the statement concluded, reiterating the government’s dedication to improving education and supporting the next generation of teachers.
