The High Court in Koforidua, Eastern Region, has convicted Akwatia Member of Parliament Ernest Yaw Kumi for contempt of court following his violation of a court order.

Mr.Kumi was barred from taking the oath of office due to an ongoing legal dispute, but he proceeded to be sworn in despite an interim injunction restraining him. In response, Justice Senyo Amedahe issued a bench warrant for Mr. Kumi’s arrest after the MP failed to appear in court for sentencing.

The court ruled that Mr. Kumi’s actions constituted a willful defiance of the court’s authority. Attempts by the Minority Caucus in Parliament to justify his absence with an official letter were dismissed by the judge, who upheld the injunction and emphasized the MP’s disregard for the court’s ruling.

With the bench warrant now active, authorities are set to take action to enforce Mr.Kumi’s arrest and ensure compliance with the court’s decision.
