Energy Minister John Jinapor has dismissed rumors suggesting the government intends to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), describing the claims as “entirely untrue.”
During a visit to the West African Gas Pipeline Company Station in Tema on February 21, Mr.Jinapor explained that while the government is exploring private sector partnerships to improve ECG’s efficiency and financial stability, there are no plans to privatize the state-owned power distributor.
“These reports are false,” he said. “ECG will not be sold. We are exploring private sector involvement to help improve efficiency, reduce losses, and enhance the company’s revenue base, which will help meet our financial obligations and make electricity more affordable.”
Mr.Jinapor emphasized that the goal of private sector participation is to strengthen the service without selling ECG, highlighting the focus on long-term sustainability.
