Richard Gyan-Mensah,  Deputy Energy and Green Transition Minister-Designate, has dismissed claims that the country is experiencing a recurrence of the prolonged power outages that were once referred to as “dumsor.”

Appearing before Parliament’s Appointments Committee on February 25, 2025, Mr.Gyan-Mensah acknowledged that while there have been isolated incidents of power cuts, they do not amount to the widespread and scheduled blackouts that defined the era of “dumsor.”

“I assure you, ‘dumsor’ is not back,” Mr.Gyan-Mensah stated. “We all remember the time when power outages were so severe that they were scheduled, and we knew exactly when the lights would go out. What we are witnessing now are temporary outages, not a return to that.”

He attributed the current power disruptions to ongoing maintenance work at several power plants and emphasized that these interruptions would subside once the necessary repairs are completed. The Minister-Designate reiterated the government’s commitment to preventing a return of the debilitating power crisis.
