In the wake of recent tidal waves that displaced over 600 people in Ghana’s Volta Region, relief efforts have been rapidly mobilized, with significant contributions from government officials and private individuals. President John Mahama has been at the forefront of these efforts, ensuring that those affected receive immediate support.

During a visit to the hardest-hit communities, Mahama announced a range of donations aimed at alleviating the suffering of displaced families. “To address the immediate needs of those affected, we have brought essential items for distribution,” he said.

Among the notable donations was a contribution of 250 bags of rice from Governs Kwame Agbodza, the Minister of Roads and Transport, intended to provide immediate food relief. Additionally, Ibrahim Mahama, the President’s younger brother and Managing Director of Engineers & Planners, pledged GHS 100,000 to further assist the victims.

These contributions, which include essential food supplies and financial aid, come at a critical time for the affected communities, many of whom have lost their homes and livelihoods. In light of the devastation, Mahama assured residents that the government is also prioritizing the completion of the Blekusu Phase Two Sea Defence Project to prevent future tidal wave damage.

He further instructed the Finance Minister to allocate funds for the project in the upcoming national budget, underlining the government’s commitment to long-term solutions for vulnerable coastal communities.
