The Ghana Health Service, with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), has organized a one-day training session to equip media professionals with essential knowledge for accurately sharing information about viral hepatitis.
Viral hepatitis, which includes hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, is a global health issue, with the highest burden in the WHO African Region.
Speaking at the media engagement, Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, Director-General of the Ghana Health Service, emphasized that while the disease claims millions of lives, it has received limited attention. He highlighted the urgent need for widespread education on its prevention.
Prof. Akoriyea noted that the media plays a crucial role in the dissemination of information and stressed the importance of equipping journalists with the necessary knowledge to combat viral hepatitis.
“Many people are living with viral hepatitis without even knowing it. Even if they are aware, they often have little understanding of the disease. There is a great need for public education to address this issue. While many are familiar with hepatitis B, most are unaware of hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E. We cannot fight this battle alone; we need the media’s support. By equipping the media with the right knowledge, they can effectively share accurate information with the public, and together, we can win this fight,”Prof. Akoriyea stated
