The School Feeding Caterers Association has welcomed the government’s decision to raise the feeding fee for basic school students from GHC 1.50 to GHC 2.00, calling it a positive step forward—though still short of what’s needed.
On March 9, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, in a social media engagement ahead of the 2025 budget presentation, announced the long-awaited fee increase in response to years of feedback from caterers and education stakeholders alike.
Speaking to Citi News on March 10, Nana Otu Sakyi-Amo Twafohene, the National President of the School Feeding Caterers Association, expressed gratitude for the boost, while stressing the need for further improvements.
“We were really happy when we heard the fee would be increased. We’re hoping the JHS students will soon benefit from this too,” she said. “Sustaining the school feeding program is a priority for every government, and one key way to ensure its longevity is by increasing the per-child fee.”
Sakyi-Amo Twafohene thanked former President John Dramani Mahama for listening to the concerns of caterers, acknowledging the long-standing struggle for a fee increase. “2 cedis is not enough, but we will manage it for now,” she added.
The new fee increase will take effect in the third term, starting in April, as part of ongoing efforts to address the needs of caterers and improve the school feeding program.
