Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has proposed the creation of a dedicated hospital for Ghana’s Members of Parliament (MPs) to address health concerns while safeguarding their privacy.

Speaking at the inauguration of the Parliamentary Service Board for the ninth Parliament on March 17, 2025, the Effutu MP outlined the unique healthcare challenges faced by lawmakers, particularly regarding confidentiality.

Afenyo-Markin emphasized that MPs often encounter significant public scrutiny, making it difficult to seek medical care without compromising personal privacy. “We are a political class, and our health issues must remain confined within certain boundaries,” Afenyo-Markin stated. “Because of confidentiality issues, people travel abroad at great cost for medical support. I believe a dedicated hospital would help address these concerns and make healthcare more accessible for parliamentarians.”

The proposal underscores the increasing pressure on lawmakers to balance their public duties with personal well-being. According to Afenyo-Markin, the establishment of a parliamentary hospital would be a milestone in ensuring that the health of MPs remains private and accessible, reducing the need for expensive international medical travel.

In addition to the healthcare proposal, the Minority Leader also suggested the construction of a new Parliamentary chamber to enhance the security of MPs. This proposal reflects his broader vision for improving the infrastructure of the legislative arm of government.
