Sarah Adwoa Safo, former Ghanaian Minister for Gender, Children, and Social Protection, has claimed that former President Nana Akufo-Addo instructed her to conduct an audit of the country’s School Feeding Programme, only to distance himself once the findings uncovered widespread corruption.

In an interview with Movement Radio, Miss Safo alleged that upon her appointment as Minister, Akufo-Addo tasked her with auditing the program, even before she was allocated the funds to oversee her ministry. Despite facing resistance from some individuals involved, she proceeded with the audit and submitted her report to the Cabinet, which revealed significant corruption, particularly in the Central Region.

Madam Safo detailed one encounter with a female official who had been uncooperative when invited for a discussion. The official later accused her of attempting to undermine government relationships, but Safo insisted her actions were solely motivated by fulfilling her duties. After the audit’s findings were made public, Safo claims that Akufo-Addo backtracked, denying that he had instructed the audit and suggesting she shelve the report.

“This is where my problems began,” Safo said, describing how Akufo-Addo distanced himself from the audit amid the ensuing backlash.

She further alleged that the same individual who had initially resisted the audit later proposed that they collaborate to inflate program allocations by including ghost schools, an attempt to misappropriate funds.

When asked about her personal relationship with Akufo-Addo, Adwoa Safo denied any conflict, noting that he was the one who appointed her to the position. However, she emphasized that once the President withdrew his support, she had little recourse.

Adwoa Safo has now called for an investigation into the School Feeding Programme by former President John Mahama, arguing that without accountability, the corruption within the program will continue unchecked.
