The government’s SIM card re-registration initiative, set to begin in June, is poised to eliminate long queues by transitioning to a fully digital registration process. This shift, designed to streamline the registration procedure, is expected to enhance convenience and efficiency for citizens, according to Sam Nartey George, the Minister for Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation.

During a visit to the Margins ID Group (Intelligent Card Production Systems) in Accra on April 8, 2025, George outlined that the upcoming process will allow citizens to complete SIM card re-registration online, bypassing the need for physical visits to registration centers. The new system will automatically verify user information, reducing the time spent on manual checks and increasing overall processing speed.

This overhaul is designed to not only save time but also improve the accuracy of the registration process, making it a more user-friendly experience for the public.

Launched in 2021, the SIM card re-registration exercise has seen several deadline extensions, primarily due to slow registration rates. Under the current regulations, all SIM card holders are required to re-register their numbers using their Ghana Card, the country’s national identity document. Despite efforts, millions of active SIM cards remain unregistered, prompting concerns over national security and the risk of fraud through the mobile registration app.

The government’s enforcement of this exercise is aimed at bolstering national security by curbing fraudulent activity and crimes facilitated by unregistered SIM cards. Additionally, the move seeks to improve industry oversight by ensuring a more accurate and reliable database of registered mobile users.
