Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) running mate in the 2024 presidential election, has dismissed speculation about a potential presidential bid in 2028, reaffirming his commitment to party unity as the party gears up for the next general election.

Speaking on the sidelines of an NPP leadership meeting held Wednesday, Dr. Prempeh—commonly referred to as “NAPO”—emphasized that his immediate focus is on strengthening internal cohesion within the party ahead of the 2024 polls.

“My immediate interest now is to get a united party for a flagbearer to be eventually crowned,” he said, signaling a desire to tamp down internal divisions and rally support behind the party’s 2024 presidential ticket.

Addressing mounting speculation about his long-term political aspirations, Dr. Prempeh was unequivocal: “No, I am not running in 2028.”

The statement is viewed by political analysts as a strategic move to shift attention away from future contests and toward the NPP’s current electoral agenda. It also positions Dr. Prempeh as a team player at a time when party unity is viewed as critical to electoral success.

His comments come amid heightened political activity as both major parties prepare for a competitive 2024 race. For the NPP, ensuring cohesion among its ranks is likely to be pivotal in countering the opposition’s momentum.

Dr. Prempeh’s public denial of future ambitions may also serve to consolidate support within the party’s leadership, signaling his alignment with the broader strategy of the current campaign rather than personal advancement.
