Security measures have been significantly heightened ahead of a critical parliamentary session on Tuesday, October 22, 2024, due to growing tensions surrounding a constitutional dispute over the status of four parliamentary seats.

In a statement signed by Frederick Bawa (retired), Deputy Marshall of Parliament, it was announced that these precautions are being implemented to safeguard the Speaker, MPs, and parliamentary staff during this sensitive period.

The move follows a recent invocation of Article 97(1)(g) of the 1992 Constitution by Minority Leader Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, which has challenged the legitimacy of four MPs’ seats, sparking political and legal controversy.

The statement further detailed that all MPs, staff, and press members will undergo rigorous screening before being allowed into the Chamber. Additionally, MPs’ bodyguards will not be granted entry during the proceedings.

Further security measures include a ban on parking around the Grand Arena, with MPs being required to use designated drop-off points within the premises of the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC).
