Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has criticised the GH₵50 million bail condition set for Ashanti Regional NPP Chairman Bernard Antwi Boasiako, alleging it was deliberately imposed to delay his release.

Speaking to reporters outside the National Intelligence Bureau (NIB) headquarters in Accra on Friday, Dr Bawumia described the bail terms as “onerous” and politically motivated.

“I must put on record that the bail conditions that have been set for Chairman Wontumi’s bail — 50 million Ghana cedis — is very onerous,” Dr Bawumia said. “I don’t know how many people in Ghana can have property worth 50 million Ghana cedis. I believe that this was just set to prevent his timely release.”

Mr Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi, remains in custody following his arrest earlier this week. He was initially detained by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) before being transferred to the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO), which later handed him over to the NIB.

Dr Bawumia’s attempt to visit Mr Boasiako at the NIB facility was unsuccessful, reportedly due to security concerns related to the growing crowd outside the building.

Despite the setback, the NPP flagbearer urged supporters to remain calm, assuring them that the party would pursue legal avenues to secure Mr Boasiako’s release.

“We are going to follow the due process, the legal process, to make sure that he is released as soon as possible,” he said.
