Joseph Kobina Ade Coker, former Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), died Saturday,May 31st at the Bank Hospital in Accra following a brief illness, party officials said. He was 69.

Mr. Coker held the influential regional chairmanship of the NDC party from 2009 until 2022, when he was unseated by Emmanuel Nii Ashie Moore in a closely watched internal contest. During his tenure, he played a key role in mobilizing party support in the politically pivotal Greater Accra Region, home to Ghana’s capital and a significant portion of the national electorate.

A familiar figure in Ghanaian political circles, Mr. Coker was known for his unapologetically direct style and regular commentary on national affairs. His statements, often delivered with characteristic candor, resonated with the NDC grassroots and occasionally sparked broader political debate.

Outside politics, Mr. Coker once served as Vice Chairman of the Ghana Football Association, reflecting a longstanding interest in sports administration.
