Supreme Court nominee Justice Hafisata Amaleboba has defended President John Mahama’s recent decision to sanction ministers who failed to declare their assets, saying the move does not amount to an overreach of presidential power.

Speaking during her vetting by Parliament’s Appointments Committee on Wednesday, Justice Amaleboba said the President’s actions do not infringe on the mandate of the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ).

“I do not think it is a usurpation of power,” she told the committee, adding that the President acted in accordance with established administrative procedures.

She explained that both the Presidency and CHRAJ have the authority to act when public officers breach asset declaration laws.

“If a public officer is reported to CHRAJ for failing to file the necessary documents, CHRAJ is entitled to take its own action,” she said. “I do not see any conflict in their respective roles.”

Her comments come amid debate over whether the President’s actions bypassed CHRAJ, the constitutionally mandated body responsible for investigating such matters.
