President John Dramani Mahama has been awarded the International Statesperson Award, the top honor for global leadership presented by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia.

Established in 1973, the award recognizes international figures whose work advances peace, freedom and long-term impact in global affairs. Mr. Mahama is the first African leader to receive the distinction since its inception, marking a notable milestone for both the organization and the continent.

In announcing the honor, the Council cited Mr. Mahama’s contributions to international diplomacy and governance, describing the award as recognition of sustained leadership on the global stage.

At the ceremony on Friday, the Council’s president and chief executive, Lauren Swartz, said Mr. Mahama’s career reflects the principles the award is intended to celebrate, including democratic leadership, support for international partnerships, and advocacy for peaceful political transitions and economic development.

In his remarks, Mr. Mahama pointed to the influence of prominent African leaders, including Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela and Kenneth Kaunda, as shaping his commitment to global peace and development.
