The New Patriotic Party (NPP) Youth Wing has accused the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) and Professor Ransford Gyampo of collaborating with the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) in an effort to disenfranchise university students in December’s elections.
In a statement signed by Salam Mustapha, the NPP’s National Youth Organizer, the ruling party alleged that UTAG’s current strike is politically motivated, claiming it is designed to prevent students from voting. The statement criticized UTAG’s decision to continue with the strike, even after Organized Labour, led by the Trade Union Congress (TUC), had called off a planned nationwide protest focused on illegal mining
issues.
The NPP suggested that Professor Gyampo is allegedly pursuing an agenda on behalf of the NDC with aspirations of securing a political appointment if the opposition party wins power. The party further argued that the NDC fears losing the student vote on various campuses, where many students are registered, and that extending the strike may limit these students’ ability to participate in the election.
The NPP concluded by urging UTAG members to resist any political influences and consider the impact of their strike on students, highlighting the potential educational and civic disruptions caused by the action.
