Reggaeton icon Nicky Jam announced Wednesday that he is withdrawing his endorsement of former President Donald Trump, citing disrespectful comments made about Puerto Rico during Trump’s recent Madison Square Garden rally.

Nicky Jam, who appeared at a Las Vegas event with Trump last month, explained to his 43.5 million Instagram followers, “The reason I supported Donald Trump was because I thought he was best for the economy.”

The artist, born Nick Rivera Caminero, criticized a comedian’s disparaging remarks about Puerto Rico, saying, “Never did I think…someone would speak poorly of my country. Puerto Rico should be respected.” He joins fellow Puerto Rican stars, including Bad Bunny, Ricky Martin, and Jennifer Lopez, who have recently endorsed Kamala Harris in response.

The Trump campaign distanced itself from the comedian, with a spokesperson saying, “This joke does not reflect the views of President Trump or the campaign.”
