OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Search, a new tool designed to provide users with quick, direct answers from the web alongside links to relevant sources. The American AI company announced the launch on Thursday, positioning it as a challenger to Google and other established search engines.
The company highlighted that the tool will enhance the ChatGPT experience by allowing users to get conversational responses alongside live web information. “ChatGPT can now search the web in a much better way than before,” OpenAI said. “You can get fast, timely answers with links to relevant web sources, which previously required a search engine.”
OpenAI says ChatGPT Search allows users to obtain “up-to-date sports scores, news, stock quotes, and more” through a natural language interface. The feature activates automatically based on the user’s query or can be manually triggered by clicking a web search icon.
To support real-time responses, OpenAI has partnered with news and data providers, adding new visual designs for categories like weather, stocks, sports, news, and maps.
ChatGPT Search is available on chatgpt.com and through both desktop and mobile apps. The feature is currently accessible to ChatGPT Plus and Team users, as well as those on the SearchGPT waitlist. OpenAI plans to extend access to Enterprise and Edu users in the coming weeks, with a wider rollout to all free users in the coming months.
The launch intensifies competition in the search engine market, where Google, Microsoft’s Bing, and other AI-powered platforms such as Perplexity are vying for dominance.
