The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has allocated over GH₵200 million to healthcare facilities across Ghana to fund free dialysis treatment for kidney patients under the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).

Dr. Da-Costa Aboagye, CEO of the NHIA, confirmed the release of the funds, stating, “The NHIA has today [Sunday] disbursed over GH₵200 million to healthcare facilities nationwide as free dialysis treatment begins.”

The move follows the NHIS’s announcement on November 30, 2024, of accredited health facilities set to provide the service, effective from December 1.

The initiative, launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, seeks to reduce the financial burden on kidney patients. It builds on a successful pilot programme earlier this year, which targeted individuals under 18 and those over 60.

The comprehensive rollout is expected to provide widespread access to essential dialysis services, offering significant relief to kidney patients across the country.
