The African Union (AU) Election Observation Team, led by former Ethiopian President H.E. Sahle-Work Zewde, has called for improvements in Ghana’s electoral process to build on the successes of previous elections. The team emphasized the importance of implementing measures that enhance the electoral experience for the benefit of the Ghanaian people.

During a courtesy visit to Ghana’s Minister of the Interior, Henry Quartey, in Accra, H.E. Sahle-Work expressed confidence in Ghana’s electoral system, describing the country as a model for democracy in Africa. She expressed optimism for a smooth and successful election on December 7, 2024.

Minister Quartey reassured the delegation that comprehensive security measures, including the Election Security Task Force, had been put in place to ensure peaceful elections. He also highlighted ongoing consultations with political parties, the Electoral Commission, and other stakeholders to promote transparency and peace.

Quartey further noted that President Nana Akufo-Addo, a proponent of peace and the rule of law, would ensure a peaceful transition of power, just as he came to office in a peaceful manner.

The AU team’s visit forms part of the Commission’s broader mandate to support African countries in consolidating democracy, peace, and security.
