Ewurabena Aubynn, the parliamentary candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has been declared the winner of the Ablekuma North seat in Ghana’s December 2024 elections.
The announcement was made by the Returning Officer at the Greater Accra Regional Collation Centre of the Electoral Commission (EC) on Tuesday evening, following a tense and dramatic collation process.
The collation process was marred by clashes between NDC supporters and security forces outside the premises, which delayed the official results.
However, the declaration has been met with strong opposition from the New Patriotic Party (NPP). NPP candidate Nana Akua Owusu Afriyieh has accused the EC official of being pressured by NDC supporters to announce the results in their favour.
“We do not accept the results announced. The official was under duress, threatened with violence to make the declaration,” Owusu Afriyieh told reporters.
Despite these claims, the EC’s official declaration stands, but the dispute underscores the tense political atmosphere surrounding the election results in the region.
