Joyce Bawah Mogtari, a special aide to President-elect John Dramani Mahama, has called on Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, to acknowledge the National Democratic Congress (NDC) as the majority party in the ninth parliament and to show respect accordingly.

The statement follows a dispute over the composition of parliament’s majority, stemming from disagreements surrounding four vacant seats and the subsequent debates about which caucus holds the majority.

In an interview on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, Mogtari stressed the importance of humility and cooperation moving forward. “I would tell Afenyo-Markin to accept the situation. You are returning to parliament in a way you did not expect. It is time to eat humble pie and show respect to the side you have so often disrespected,” she said.

She added, “Now that we are in charge, I expect our parliamentarians to show their best abilities and prove that the NDC is a broad-based party with mass appeal.”

Mogtari’s comments underline the ongoing tensions as the NDC prepares to assume a leadership role in the new parliament.
