President-elect John Dramani Mahama has emphasized the importance of continued dialogue with outgoing President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo even after the formal transition of power. Speaking to the media following the inauguration of the Presidential Transition team on December 11, Mahama expressed his appreciation for Akufo-Addo’s willingness to cooperate to ensure a smooth transition and reinforce Ghana’s democratic processes.

Mahama highlighted that Akufo-Addo had briefed him on both internal and external security matters, as well as the state of the economy. He said that while the transition team would delve deeper into these issues, he was pleased with the assurances given regarding a seamless transfer of power.

“It is crucial that we maintain open lines of communication even after the transition, to help consolidate Ghana’s democratic credentials and work in the nation’s best interest,” Mahama said.

President Akufo-Addo, for his part, praised Ghana’s standing as a robust and effective democracy, underlining the nation’s commitment to human rights, the rule of law, and public security. He reiterated his support for the incoming administration, ensuring that it would have the necessary resources to swiftly begin its work.

Akufo-Addo also addressed concerns about recent instances of lawlessness, commending Mahama’s intervention in reinforcing the authority of the state. Reflecting on their long-standing relationship, he described the engagement between the two as “warm and constructive,” noting that they had known each other for nearly 20 years, having first met in Parliament in 1997.
