The Ghana Grid Company (GRIDCo) and the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) have announced the temporary shutdown of several thermal power plants in Tema. The disruption, affecting power supply, follows a shutdown of the West Africa Gas Pipeline Company Limited’s (WAPCo) Tema Regulatory & Metering Station.
In a joint statement issued on December 12, both companies explained that the shutdown was prompted by operational issues at WAPCo’s Lagos Beach Compressor Station, where larger-than-expected liquids and debris were encountered. This has led to a shortfall in gas supply, causing limited load management in some regions.
While the companies expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved soon, they apologised to affected customers and assured that power supply would be restored once gas delivery resumes.
