A cholera outbreak in Kwesimintsim has claimed two lives, with 19 new cases recorded at the Kwesimintsim Government Hospital in just two hours. The Ghana Health Service has issued a public health alert as the situation continues to worsen.

Dr. Osei Frimpong, Medical Superintendent at the hospital, expressed growing concern about the rapid rise in cases. Speaking to Connect News, he said: “We are seeing a steady increase in new cases daily, with two patients brought in dead. Our investigations confirm that these are cholera-related cases, and the situation is becoming more alarming.”

Dr. Frimpong urged the public to remain vigilant, advising anyone experiencing frequent diarrhea to seek medical attention immediately rather than self-medicating. “Today alone, we’ve recorded 19 new cases in just two hours, and we expect the numbers to rise by the end of the day,” he warned.

The hospital is facing significant challenges, including a shortage of essential medical supplies such as drips, plasters, and paracetamol. Dr. Frimpong also highlighted difficulties in caring for elderly patients, for whom adult diapers have been procured. However, he stressed that the Regional Health Directorate had instructed the hospital not to charge patients for these additional costs, placing a heavy burden on the facility.

In light of the growing crisis, Dr. Frimpong has called for more healthcare professionals to be deployed to the hospital. “We are in urgent discussions with the Regional Health Directorate to expedite reinforcements and ensure we can provide the necessary care,” he said. The hospital continues to appeal for donations of medical supplies to help address the urgent needs of the patients.
