Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has raised concerns about how the incoming administration of President-elect John Dramani Mahama will generate revenue to fund its proposed projects, given its pledge to remove several key taxes.

Speaking in Parliament on Monday, December 16, Afenyo-Markin pointed out that Ghanaians are keen to see how the Mahama government will protect the public purse in light of its promises.

During his campaign, Mahama vowed to abolish multiple taxes within his first 100 days in office, arguing that these taxes were placing undue strain on citizens. Among the taxes he pledged to remove are the e-levy, COVID levy, the 10% betting levy, emissions levy, and import duties on vehicles and equipment used for industrial and agricultural purposes.

Afenyo-Markin, addressing NDC MPs, said: “We will see how you will protect the public purse. We have heard from Terkper that you can’t finance Free SHS. We will see where you will raise revenue to fund the Nkokor Nkitinkitin.”

The Majority Leader’s comments highlight ongoing concerns about the feasibility of the Mahama administration’s tax-cutting plans and the potential impact on the country’s fiscal stability.
