A major fire has destroyed more than 30 shops at the Race Course Market in Kumasi, with traders losing significant stock and property. The fire, which broke out around 1am on Tuesday, engulfed metal containers and wooden shops, primarily affecting businesses dealing in watermelons, grapes, and cold storage operations.
The Ghana Fire Service responded swiftly, deploying three fire engines to combat the blaze and prevent it from spreading further. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported, but the damage has left many traders devastated, having lost their livelihoods.
Naomi Serwaa, leader of the Watermelon Sellers Association, has called on the government and philanthropists for urgent assistance to support the affected traders.
