Ghana’s newly sworn-in President, John Dramani Mahama, has praised former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo as a “worthy opponent,” reflecting on their long-standing political rivalry and mutual respect.

In his inaugural address at Black Star Square on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, Mahama reminisced about their shared political journey, which began in 1997 when both were elected to Parliament, representing their respective constituencies. Over the years, the two men rose through the political ranks, eventually leading their parties and facing off in three elections for the presidency.

Despite their political differences, Mahama spoke warmly of his relationship with Akufo-Addo, highlighting how the former president had always greeted him with a “warm, firm handshake and a smile,” often referring to him as “Johnnie” – a personal touch he described as emblematic of their friendship.

“While we belong to opposing political parties, we shared a sense of mutual respect,” Mahama said. “In those early days, we probably could not have imagined that destiny would bring us to the leadership of our respective parties and that we would face off three times for the highest office in the land.”

Reflecting on their years of rivalry, Mahama concluded, “Nana, as this will be our final meeting under these circumstances, and as I look back on the journey we have travelled together, I must say, you have without exception, been a worthy opponent.”
