President John Dramani Mahama has proposed the potential privatisation of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) as part of efforts to tackle inefficiencies in the country’s power distribution system.

During a meeting with a World Bank delegation on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at his office in Accra, Mahama suggested that involving the private sector in the management of ECG could help address long-standing issues, such as operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and poor service delivery.

The President noted that the privatisation of ECG could be a key component of a broader strategy to modernise the energy sector and improve its performance. He also recalled Ghana’s participation in the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) Compact during his tenure as Vice President, highlighting the importance of efficient energy distribution for the nation’s development.

Mahama assured stakeholders that any decision regarding ECG’s future would involve extensive consultations to balance public interest with the need for improved efficiency.

“If we don’t fix ECG, we will continue to face significant challenges across the entire power value chain,” he said. “Privatising the last point of electricity distribution and bringing in private sector efficiency is something we want to pursue, with expertise from the World Bank to help us move forward.”
