President John Dramani Mahama has instructed his Executive Secretary to formally request an update from the Inspector General of Police (IGP) on the status of investigations into deaths that occurred during the 2020 and 2024 elections.

Speaking at the National Muslim Prayer and Thanksgiving event at the National Mosque in Kanda, Accra, on January 10, Mahama emphasized his administration’s commitment to justice and accountability. He revealed that the formal request to the IGP would seek clarity on the ongoing investigations into the incidents.

“We know that eight citizens were killed in the 2020 elections,” Mahama said. “If justice is not served, it breeds impunity. As a party, we have consistently called for an investigation into these deaths to determine what led to them and prevent similar occurrences in the future.”

The President also pledged to ensure fair compensation for the families of the victims, noting that once the new Attorney General takes office, efforts would be made to assess appropriate reparations for those affected.

“We will ask the Attorney General, upon taking office, to determine fair and adequate compensation for the families of those who lost their lives,” Mahama added.
