Kwaku Kwarteng, the Member of Parliament for Obuasi West, has called for an urgent and thorough investigation into the violent clash between illegal miners and military personnel in Obuasi that resulted in the deaths of seven individuals. The incident took place on the night of January 18, 2025, when approximately 60 miners breached the security perimeter of a mine and attempted to access the Deep Decline area.

According to a statement from the Ghana Armed Forces’ Public Relations Department, the miners, armed with locally made rifles, knives, axes, and other tools, opened fire on the military when confronted. The clash escalated into a deadly confrontation, leaving several others injured.

Kwarteng expressed concern over the incident and emphasized the importance of accountability. He confirmed that both the Divisional Police Command and Municipal Police Command are conducting investigations into the loss of life. “I am confident the Military Command is also reviewing the incident to uncover the full details,” Kwarteng said.

The MP urged that the findings of the investigation be presented to President John Dramani Mahama to ensure transparency and accountability. He also called on the government to expedite the process, saying, “It is crucial that the law takes its course and justice prevails.”

In response to the incident, President Mahama has already ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the events surrounding the deadly clash. The investigation is expected to shed light on the circumstances leading to the deadly encounter.
