Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, Ghana’s Minister-Designate for the Interior, has stated that the decision on the fate of the country’s Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, rests entirely with President John Dramani Mahama.

Muntaka’s comments came during his vetting by the Appointments Committee, in response to a question from Ranking Member Alexander Afenyo-Markin, who asked whether Dampare would continue in his role under the new administration.

The question of Dampare’s future has sparked public debate, with some calling for his removal, while others have supported his leadership in maintaining law and order.

Muntaka made it clear that, while he can offer recommendations, the final decision regarding the retention or removal of security heads is the prerogative of the president.

“I can assure you there will be assessments of all team members, but it is President Mahama who will make the final call,” Muntaka said. “My role is to make recommendations, but I do not have the authority to determine who stays or goes.”

The future of IGP Dampare is now a point of focus as the new administration evaluates leadership within Ghana’s security services.
