More than 380 diplomatic passports have been returned following a recall issued by Dr. Callistus Mahama, the Secretary to the President of Ghana.

The directive, which expired on January 24, 2025, called for the return of passports issued during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration. Most of the returns were completed by January 23, according to local reports.

The recall is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that diplomatic passports are used exclusively for official state purposes, such as representing the country internationally. These passports offer privileges like expedited customs clearance and tax exemptions but also present security risks if misused.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has vowed to implement stricter measures to prevent the unauthorized possession of diplomatic passports by individuals no longer holding official positions.
