Prof. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, the newly appointed Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), has vowed to align his leadership with the health priorities outlined in the governing party’s manifesto, underscoring his commitment to implementing the government’s health policies effectively.

At his handover ceremony at the GHS head office in Accra on January 29, 2025, Prof. Kaba emphasized that his tenure would focus on “resetting” the health system to ensure the government’s promises are fulfilled. He stated, “I come here as an appointee of the President [John Mahama], and what we are going to do is enshrined in our manifesto. All that has to do with health, especially what the Ghana Health Service is tasked to do, will be our mission.”

In addition to his focus on health reforms, Prof. Kaba highlighted the importance of staff welfare, discipline, and organizational efficiency within the GHS. “One of the key areas we need to focus on is staff welfare, which is central to our work. My passion for this has only grown stronger,” he said.

He also committed to enforcing strict discipline and professionalism within the GHS, warning against office politics and internal conflicts that could hinder progress. Prof. Kaba emphasized that his administration would not tolerate any unnecessary distractions.

Prof. Kaba succeeds Dr. Patrick Kuma-Aboagye and brings with him extensive experience in both neurosurgery and public health. He previously served as the Director of the Ghana Health Service under the Office of the Director-General with special duties related to neurosurgery training. He also established the neurosurgery unit at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital in 2004.

Prof. Kaba holds several prominent roles, including serving as the second Vice President of the Continental Association of Africa Neurosurgeons (CAANS) for West Africa.
