The government has officially dropped all criminal charges against former National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, and the party’s Communications Officer, Anthony Kwaku Boahen.

The decision, announced by Attorney-General Dominic Ayine, brings an end to the legal proceedings that began in December 2019. The two NDC officials had been facing trial over a leaked audio recording in which Ofosu Ampofo was allegedly heard discussing plans to instigate violence and create insecurity, with the aim of blaming the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The recording reportedly included references to strategies such as kidnappings, arson, and verbal attacks on high-profile public figures, including National Peace Council Chairman Prof. Emmanuel Asante and Electoral Commission Chairperson Jean Mensa.

Ofosu Ampofo and Boahen had both pleaded not guilty to charges of conspiracy to cause harm, while Ofosu Ampofo also faced two additional charges of assaulting a public officer, to which he also pleaded not guilty.

With the charges now withdrawn, the case has been dismissed, bringing an end to a high-profile legal battle.
