The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has called on President John Dramani Mahama to take swift action following allegations of illegal mining involving the Member of Parliament for Aowin, Oscar Larbi.

In a letter dated January 30, the coalition, which includes media, labour groups, faith-based organisations, and traditional authorities, urged the President to intervene urgently in the matter. The allegations focus on illegal mining activities in the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in the Aowin Municipality, located in the Western North Region.

Traditional authorities in the area have accused Oscar Larbi of facilitating illegal mining in the reserve, which they say has caused significant environmental damage, including deforestation and the destruction of local vegetation.

The coalition has called for an independent investigation into the matter, involving the Ghana Police Service, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Minerals Commission. The group is demanding that those responsible for the environmental degradation be held accountable.

In addition, the coalition has called for immediate action against any MPs or government officials found to be involved in illegal mining, stressing the importance of maintaining public trust in the government’s commitment to tackling galamsey.

The petition has also been sent to the Speaker of Parliament and the Inspector General of Police, urging further attention to the issue.
