Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has criticised Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to suspend four Members of Parliament following chaotic scenes during a vetting session on Thursday, January 30, 2025.

Speaking in an interview with Joy News on Saturday, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu questioned the Speaker’s authority to impose such sanctions, asserting that neither the Standing Orders nor the Constitution grants him the power to do so.

While acknowledging that the Speaker was right to invoke Order 342 of the new Standing Orders, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu raised concerns about the legitimacy of Bagbin’s actions. “The question to ask is from where the Speaker is deriving his authority. Neither the Standing Orders nor the Constitution grants the Speaker any such authority,” he said.

He further criticised the Speaker for what he perceived as an overstep, suggesting that Bagbin had acted beyond the scope of his powers. “The Speaker has not only jumped the gun but has gone outside the prescription of the law to impose his sanction,” he remarked. “His own attitude and conduct is questionable.”
