The government has vowed to take further steps to prevent food shortages under the Free Senior High School (SHS) programme, according to Felix Kwakye Ofosu, acting spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama.

This assurance follows the recent release of GHS 200 million to address food supply shortfalls in schools, which were identified just weeks ago.

In an interview on Channel One Newsroom, Kwakye Ofosu criticised the previous administration’s poor planning and implementation of the policy, which resulted in the reopening of schools without adequate food supplies. He explained that headmasters had requested a delay in the school reopening to allow time for food distribution, but their request was denied.

“Upon taking office, President Mahama took immediate action. Within days, he ordered the evacuation of food to schools, and GHS 200 million was allocated to the Ghana Education Service for the procurement of supplies,” Kwakye Ofosu stated.

The acting spokesperson assured that the government would ensure sufficient food is provided in future, emphasising that steps have already been taken to address current issues. “Adequate measures will be put in place going forward to ensure students are properly fed,” he said.
