Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin has revealed that government officials personally requested the Minority not to scrutinise Linda Akweley Ocloo, the Greater Accra Regional Minister, during her vetting session on January 28, 2025.

Ocloo’s vetting lasted less than 10 minutes and drew attention for its brevity and the lack of questioning by the committee. This has raised questions about why her vetting proceeded so quickly without challenges.

Speaking on Ghana Broadcasting Corporation on Monday, February 3, Afenyo-Markin explained that the Minority’s decision to forgo questioning was in response to appeals from government representatives, who argued that Ocloo, a widow, might not cope with the intense scrutiny.

“They came begging that the woman could not stand the scrutiny. They said she is a widow and that she could not stand the heat, so we let her go,” he said, adding that since Ocloo met the qualifications under Article 78 of the 1992 Constitution, the Minority did not challenge her appointment.

Article 78 outlines the qualifications for ministerial appointments, specifying that nominees must either be Members of Parliament or eligible to be elected.
