According to Numbeo, Accra is the fifth most expensive city in Africa for renting, with a rent index of 12.0. This ranking places it at 230 globally.

The report highlights that high rental costs can significantly impact household budgets, leaving limited funds for essential expenses such as food, education, healthcare, and transportation. Numbeo also questions the necessity of living in urban centers with high rents, especially as remote work becomes more common.

Lagos leads as the most expensive city in Africa for rent, with an index of 24.3, placing it 122nd globally. Cape Town (18.0), Addis Ababa (17.8), and Dar es Salaam (14.4) follow in second, third, and fourth places, respectively.

While urban areas offer advantages like better infrastructure and economic opportunities, the report emphasizes the need to balance living costs with income.

On the other hand, cities like Alexandria and Cairo in Egypt, Tripoli in Libya, Algiers in Algeria, and Tunis in Tunisia have the lowest rent costs across Africa.
